We are delighted to present you with EPFL’s first fully digital annual report. With this new approach, we wanted to give more people an opportunity to learn about the exciting progress we’ve made across all three of our core missions: teaching, research and innovation.
As you browse this new digital format, you’ll learn how we anchored our role as a pioneer in innovative teaching methods in Switzerland, such as through our new LEARN Center and our initiative to broaden the study of computational thinking. You will get an inside look at the groundbreaking research being carried out at our labs, for applications ranging from blockchain technology and advanced neurotech methods to drones that can move objects 40 times their weight and AI algorithms that can help protect our personal data.
You will also read about EPFL Innovation Park’s 25th anniversary and the fact that our labs produced 25 startups in 2018 – making it a record year.
In 2019, we are celebrating 50 years since our School became a federal institute on the initiative of Maurice Cosandey, its first president. But I don’t want to wait until 2020 to share this important milestone with you. So I would like to invite you already to join us at our open-house event marking the occasion, on 14–15 September 2019. We look forward to seeing you there.
Until then, happy browsing!
Martin Vetterli, President
